Family of Ebola patient agrees on settlement with Texas hospital

The Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital in Dallas and the family of Thomas Eric Duncan, a fatal Ebola victim, reached an undisclosed settlement sum, The Associated Press reported on November 12.

The agreement stemmed from the lawsuit created by Duncan’s family after he was treated at the hospital before dying on Oct. 8, 2014. Duncan was initially misdiagnosed and sent home from the hospital’s emergency room after he came back to North Texas from Liberia on September 20. Two days later, he was taken back to the hospital and found to have Ebola, the deadly virus that has claimed the lives of over 5,000 people in West Africa.

The settlement amount was not disclosed, but considering Texas’ strict medical malpractice laws, the family’s attorney believed it was more than would have been granted in court.
